Vehicle Broken Down?

What to do if your car breaks down?

Vehicle breakdowns occur when you least expect them, even the best maintained car can run out of petrol! How you react to a roadside breakdown can prevent injury and possibly get you the help you need faster. Here are a few tips to help you cope in the unfortunate event of a breakdown.

Don’t break down over a car breakdown

Be Prepared

Keep a roadside safety kit that includes jumper cables, reflectors, basic tools, and an empty petrol can in your car. Also, be sure to keep a couple of litres of water in your boot, more if travelling long distances in underpopulated areas. Have a copy of emergency numbers for roadside assistance and insurance providers stored both in your mobile phone and somewhere in your car.

Safety:

If you car starts to stall on a busy freeway, try and get to an emergency stopping lane as close to the side of the road as possible. If that’s not an option, just stay in the car. Yes, it’s unnerving to be sitting in a toasted vehicle when traffic’s piling up behind you, but attempting to cross a high-speed highway on foot is just plain insane. Most Australian toll roads also have cameras, so rest assured someone’s aware of your predicament anyway.

Getting assistance

After moving your car to the side of the road, turning on its hazard lights, and raising its bonnet, return to your car to call for assistance. If your mobile phone is not working, seek help from passing drivers. When someone does assist, ask them to call your roadside assistance or Us!, and stay in your car.
Never get into a car with strangers!!
